Project Overview
Reimagining a Global Travel Platform for a Streamlined, Mobile-First Workforce
The Travel.NBCUni.com internal travel hub, serving over 50,000 employees globally with access to booking tools, travel policies, safety resources, and expense support. The legacy site was underutilized, fragmented, and difficult to navigate—lacking mobile optimization, global navigation, and brand consistency.
In 2019, I led a full redesign and relaunch of the platform, transforming it into a mobile-first, fully responsive experience built on Drupal 8. We introduced a streamlined architecture, enhanced search, SOS alert feeds, embedded training videos, and unified the experience across 17 regional content teams.
Post-launch, the site saw a 45% increase in total site views and a 272% increase in unique visitors, significantly boosting employee engagement and self-service efficiency.

Process
My approach followed an iterative, research-backed UX design framework, grounded in transparency, collaboration, and speed. I established a repeatable workflow with Figma, Microsoft Teams, Slack, and Jira to ensure alignment across internal teams and our external agency partner.
Key Phases:
Discovery, Research & Alignment
• Stakeholder interviews (T&E VP, Analysts, Regional Editors)
• Requirements gathering for 17 localized content editors
• Content audit, site inventory, analytics review, top tasks survey
• Competitive and heuristic analysis of similar enterprise travel portals
Ideation & Exploration
• UX architecture, sitemap restructuring, content prioritization, scalable navigation
• Designed new global nav, search system, and live SOS alert feed
Design Execution
• Medium-fidelity wireframes and logic flows
• Mobile-first UI across homepage, booking flows, training videos, etc.
Development Collaboration
• Prototype, online testing of mockups and task flows with internal users
• Feedback incorporated into revised hierarchy and layouts
• Engineering collaboration on Drupal 8 migration and modular backend
QA & Launch
• Accessibility compliance (WCAG 2.0 / ADA)
• Multilingual support and content governance for all regions
The Challenge
The existing site did not support the evolving needs of NBCUniversal’s global, on-the-go workforce.
It was primarily used as a link-out portal to Concur, with:
• Outdated layout and inconsistent design patterns
• No global navigation, poor content hierarchy, and hard-to-find resources
• Important alerts and updates buried or missed
• Inconsistent content ownership across regions
• Lack of search functionality or filtering
• Minimal engagement and low repeat usage
• Accessibility and mobile usability issues

Research
I advocated for and implemented a full UX Research Strategy to validate assumptions and prioritize user needs. Research insights shaped everything from IA and page templates to visual hierarchy and onboarding content.
Methods Included:
• Top Tasks Survey (32 internal participants): Identified most critical content types
• Omniture Data Analysis: Revealed site abandonment points and low engagement
• Content Audit: Flagged broken links, outdated resources, and redundancies
• User Interviews: Uncovered frustrations with navigation and search
• Stakeholder Sessions: Aligned business goals with user needs
• Competitive Analysis: Evaluated enterprise travel tools and booking systems
• Usability Testing: Tested proposed features and UI mockups with company participants

Insights & Reflections
Mobile-first isn’t optional. Most users accessed the site from phones while traveling, making responsive, touch-optimized design critical.
Navigation simplicity boosts engagement. Global nav + structured IA enabled faster access to booking tools and safety updates.
UX research earns trust. Involving stakeholders in discovery and testing created strong alignment and faster approvals.
Scalability matters. With 17 regional teams managing content, backend systems and editorial governance needed to be flexible and user-friendly.
Embedded video + search increased utility. By adding media and robust search, we improved training engagement and task completion.
Final Thoughts
This project wasn’t just a redesign—it was a reintroduction of a critical internal tool that had lost its usefulness. By grounding the work in research, aligning with NBCUniversal’s enterprise design standards, and embracing scalable, mobile-first UX, we delivered a high-value resource that now serves teams across the globe.
